What Are You Expecting?

by Dr. Julie Doobay June 1, 2015 No Comments

Gift by front doorOften, we set our standard for how things should or could be, based on our past experience. We expect no more or no less than we have been accustomed to believe is possible. Most of the time, we do get what we had expected though it usually does not come to us as we had anticipated.

I know from personal experience that it can be difficult to just expect good things. There were times when I really believed that I could avoid disappointment by lowering my expectation. When I did not expect goods things, I could neither see good things nor did I get good things. However, it is the expectation that things will be better that keeps you motivated and excited for life. When you allow yourself to reach for another belief you stretch your openness to the possibility that things can get better.

We tend to look at the way things are and allow our expectations to be guided by the current experience. This is great if you are happy with your current condition but if you are not, you do have the ability to change your expectation. It is important to focus on the expectation that things can get better rather than expecting things to unfold exactly as you think they should. You can welcome what is with openness and still expect that goodness will unfold regardless of how conditions immediately appear.

Your beliefs are the foundation that your expectations are built upon. Your life experiences have shaped what you believe to be true and what you expect to be possible. Our beliefs are so ingrained into us that we are usually unaware when our thoughts are not aligned with our desires. Beliefs are just thoughts that you keep thinking, and when your mind keeps replaying these thoughts the belief becomes more active. Just becoming aware that the thought is not congruent with your desire can serve to weaken a belief. When you believe something to be true you tend to focus only on those things that support that truth. But when you open yourself to new beliefs you can expect to see new truths.

The reason why we do anything, or want anything, is the belief that it will make us feel better. Our belief in ourselves may be uncertain but we all have a deep-seated desire for things to get better. What is needed is faith. Faith that everything is always working out the way it should. Faith in yourself, in others, and in the universe. Tuning into faith brings you to a positive state of expectation that things will always work out. Expecting that good things are coming your way and assuming that things will always work out allows you to look beyond a circumstance that would otherwise appear grim.

Life is always working out for you. Look beyond what past experience has allowed you to believe. Your past is not your present or your future. You can choose to reject the thoughts that are not aligned with what you want for your life. You have the ability to create the life you want and it starts with changing what you choose to believe and what you expect for yourself.

“You get out of life what you expect from it. Life is miraculous. Expect your journey to be brilliant.” (Dr. Julie)
