A long time patient of mine just told me that the longer he has been under my care, the more he is like a duck. I was a little dumbfounded at first, but he went on to explain that ducks are comfortable in any weather. While everyone else is complaining about the weather and other external circumstances over which they have no control, he is as content as a duck swimming in ice cold water while it is raining .

Have you ever had to “walk on eggshells” around someone? You know. The feeling you get when everything appears okay superficially, but there is something that is not being said. There is a sense of tension but you aren’t sure why because the feeling does not match the person’s actions or behaviours. This type of situation arises when matters that really need to be addressed are left unacknowledged and the emotions resulting from them are not being expressed properly, if at all. My recovery and subsequent rehabilitation from paralysis,
following a serious brain infection, taught me to look beyond difficult circumstances and to trust that everything would work out. I discovered that my determination to recover was progressively strengthened as I realized that I would, and I could, endure anything.
Trust is knowing that you will persevere regardless of how events unfold and circumstances reveal themselves. Letting go of the need to control those aspects of life that you cannot control can be very freeing. Precious and vital energy wasted by imagining all the possible catastrophes could be better used by knowing that we will be “okay”, regardless of the situation.

When checking in with reality, I suppose the first thing to do is make an observation of the “reality” you are living. I mean, is your “reality” a joyful existence, is it the same @#$% different day, or is it something completely different? What does your reality look like to yourself and others? I think this is something worth checking and what it all comes down to is where do you put your focus.
